Context

Guided by our vision of ensuring that the environment, natural resources and
biodiversity in Zambia are secured and sustainably managed for people and
nature, the mission of the WWF Zambia team is to lead the development and
delivery of WWF Zambia’s four Conservation Goals related to People, Wildlife,
Forests and Freshwater.

Set in Zambia’s North-Western Province, WWF has identified the Kabompo
catchment Landscape as a new area for intervention with incredible untapped
conservation potential. WWF Zambia is seeking to employ a Landscape Manager to
the based in the Kabompo area and to set up and coordinate all WWF activities
in this landscape. This position has a specific focus on research and aims to
deepen WWF’s technical and institutional understanding of this landscape.

Major Function

The Landscape Manager plays the lead role in the planning, coordination, and
management of WWF’s multi-sectoral landscape-based interventions in West Lunga
ecosystem and the wider Kabompo catchment area. He/She would be in charge of
setting up the programme in this landscape, establish research initiatives
with partners, engage with stakeholders and coordinate research projects on
the ground.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

-->Strategic Development – set-up and lead, with key partners and stakeholders, the development, implementation and monitoring of a shared vision and road map for the Kabompo Landscape programme.
-->Development of Research Initiatives – lead the design and set-up of a research programme, identify research needs, develop partnerships with research institutes or consultants, coordinate research teams on the ground and when required, assist in leading research projects.
-->Represent WWF and Manage Relationships with Key Partners – facilitate dialogue and optimise partnerships with and between donors, key government agencies, research institutes, civil society, traditional authorities and private sector partners.
-->Programme Management – oversee the integrated planning and delivery of WWF investments in the landscape ensuring that work plans are relevant and effective, key deliverables are met and narrative and financial reports are completed in a timely and accurate fashion.
-->People Management – recruit, manage and oversee the performance of the landscape-based team, ensuring optimal coordination, team-work and communication within the landscape and across WWF Zambia.
-->Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning – ensure that effective systems and process are in place for monitoring strategy outcomes and impact within the landscape, and that progress and learning are used to inform adaptive management and the continued development of the programme.
-->Capacity Development – identify gaps in expertise of WWF and partners and bring that expertise to the area in the form of consultants, new partners, and/or short-term technical assistance who can provide, impart or build the required knowledge and skills.
-->Financial Management – supervise thorough financial planning, management and monitoring of the WWF Kabompo Landscape office, ensuring value for money, adherence to financial standards and that resources are used efficiently to deliver against agreed strategic objectives and annual plans.
-->Communication – establish regularised and relevant communications to strengthen engagement with targeted audiences within the landscape and at national and international levels.
-->Resource Mobilisation – identify funding needs for the landscape and mobilise the resources necessary to effectively realise objectives and improve the overall impact of the programme.

Working Relationships

Internal

-->WWF Zambia Interact on a regular basis with the Conservation Manager, Technical Conservation Teams, Communication Team and Finance Team. Engage with and support WWF Zambia staff to understand and contribute towards the landscape programme.
-->WWF Network Liaise with network partners, regional leads and the practice teams to mobilise support, technical expertise and guidance as required.

External

-->Interact with all relevant stakeholders at the community, district, and provincial level of provinces in the landscape.
-->Interact with donors including facilitating donor and stakeholder visits to project sites, central government partners, and NGOs on ad-hoc basis.
-->Interact with research institutions, consultants and private sector partners.

Desired profile

Qualifications

-->A PhD degree in the field of Natural Resource Management/ Wildlife or Fisheries Management/ or Biology; or a MSc degree with significant equivalent professional research experience.

Experience

-->At least 10 years’ experience in natural resource research with a focus on design and execution of qualitative and quantitative research projects and landscape-based approaches;
-->A minimum of 5 years professional field experience as a project/programme manager and team leader of multidisciplinary teams;
-->Experience in the development and execution of research projects, data collection and statistical analyses;
-->Experience in participatory and multi-stakeholder processes;
-->Experience in working in a remote setting, basic facilities and infrastructure and with a high level of independency;
-->Proven experience with the financial management of donor funded projects.

Knowledge

-->Broad knowledge of freshwater ecosystems, fisheries, wildlife and forest management with strengths in ecological and social research, fisheries/wildlife management operations and rural development;
-->Comprehensive knowledge of research methodologies, data collection and analysis, and statistical and GIS computer software programs;
-->Experience working in an international context and the ability to work well with people from different cultures and backgrounds;
-->Understanding of the actors in the field of ecological and conservation research in Zambia;
-->Familiarity with key Zambian natural resource management policy, legislation and government departments.

facilities.
