Zambia has been implementing several programmes to support vulnerable
Zambians. Its recent programming areas include nutrition, agriculture, food
security, HIV/AIDS, WASH, financial inclusion, and early child development.
Background
CRS will be implementing the 3-year Mayi & Mwana project in target districts
to improve antenatal and postnatal health services in health facilities,
improve health seeking practices by women and improve coordination among
district and provincial teams within the MoH, thereby reducing the incidence
of maternal and newborn mortality in target districts. Mayi & Mwana will
address barriers to positive health outcomes for mothers and newborns in
Petauke, Sinda, and Katete districts in Eastern Province utilizing a district
health system strengthening approach to improve timely access to high quality
care for pregnant women and newborns. CRS will tailor the program to specific
community needs and will address supply and demand barriers to women’s access
to quality emergency obstetric and newborn care.
Job Summary
This position is intended to augment the positions of the facility in charge
and/or MCH/Labor ward in-charges and not to takeover these roles. The post
bearer shall be a qualified Midwife/Medical Licentiate.
> The mentor will work closely with the facility in-charge to coordinate Obstetric and neonatal care activities at the facility, Health centers & Health Posts affiliated to the facility.
> The incumbent will serve as a facility-based mentor and provide technical guidance and mentorship for quality obstetric, neonatal & child health services.
> Liaise with focal point persons in partner health facilities to support SMAGs in their catchment areas.
> Facilitate health facility assessments to determine areas for capacity building and quality improvement
> Strengthen provision of EmONC in facilities through training of midwives/healthcare providers and ongoing mentorship and supportive supervision to sustain quality of care
> Provide ongoing in-person and distance mentoring to midwives, especially those at career entry level. Utilize tele mentoring including use of the ECHO platform to provide more sophisticated ongoing mentoring, supportive supervision and training
> Work with facility in charges to identify existing network of SMAGs within targeted communities and linkage of these groups to each other
> Facilitate capacity assessment of existing SMAGs and needs for training, mentorship, and supportive supervision
> Support coordination of community level activities by community volunteers in Safe motherhood action groups (SMAGs) within the catchment population of the facility and ensuring linkage to quality antenatal and neonatal care.
> Support data analysis with real time development of strategies to address gaps identified on daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
> Work with the District MCH Coordinator to ensure regular Maternal, Perinatal and Death Surveillance reviews are conducted with institution of remedial measures in a timely and coordinated manner
> Support capacity building of the facility’s continuous quality improvement teams around the use of data use for decision making.
> Work with facility leads in the timely reporting of weekly and monthly data to MoH;
> The incumbent will serve as the Point of Contact (POC) for site level clarifications and will provide leadership during site visits and demonstrate understanding of the MNCH activities at the facility and in the community.
> The facility mentor will support the facility in-charge in the day to day assignment of tasks for Community Health Workers and supervise community visits including domiciliary visits.
> Have good analytical skills
> Able to conduct thorough data reviews and able to infer clinical situations from presented data
Typical Background, Experience & Requirements
Education and Professional Experience
> Medical Licentiate or Midwife.
> Masters in Development /Public Health or similar field, an added advantage
> Minimum of seven years of work experience in MNCH programming with progressive responsibilities, ideally with an international NGO, with minimum of three years of working on programming interventions.
> Demonstrate application of technical principles and concepts in MNCH program coordination. General knowledge of other related disciplines to support proper cross-sectoral approaches.
> Experience in mentoring, coaching, facilitation, and training applying adult learning principles and practices with special focus on critical Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health curricula.
> Experience with program monitoring and evaluation, including applying data collection tools and methodologies, data analysis, and data presentation.
> Experience and skills in networking and relations with donors, peer organizations, and faith-based and civil society partners. Understanding of partnership principles.
> Proficient in MS Office packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Web Conferencing Applications, information and budget management systems, knowledge-sharing networks.

> Excellent relationship management skills with ability to influence and get buy-in from people not under direct supervision and to work with individuals in diverse geographical and cultural settings.
> Strong strategic, analytical, problem-solving and systems thinking skills with capacity to see the big picture whilst teasing out granular detail, and ability to make sound judgement
> Strong written and oral communication skills in English and relevant local dialect appropriate for the setting
> Strong presentation, facilitation, training, mentoring, and coaching skills
> Proactive, resourceful, and results-oriented
Required/Desired Foreign Language Proficiency in English and relevant local
dialect
Travel Required 50% travel
