# Job Description


Northrise Farms is a wholly owned agricultural unit of Northrise University
whose primary objective is to contribute towards reduction of operation costs
of the University. The farm is situated along Kitwe-Ndola dual carriage way in
a prime agricultural area endowed with good climate, rich soils, high water
table and good transport network and other favourable factors for agriculture
activities.

The farm provides high quality farm produce to the University community as
well as the general public from its current chicken, eggs, banana, beef,
vegetable, and other crop production activities. Apart from maintaining a
sustainable economic Northrise Farm operation, the establishment also serves
as a foundation for the commencement of the Faculty of Agriculture at
Northrise University in the near future.

Job Purpose and Required Skills

The job holder provides general production oversight and performs the overall
day to day functions of planning, controlling, coordinating and organizing the
production related activities of the University Farm which encompass close
monitoring of all crops and livestock. In carrying out this function, the job
holder’s overall performance will be measured by their ability to meet set
budget objectives and production targets.

They work in close liaison with the business operations wing of the farm to
ensure timely availability of labour, supplies and other resources. This will
require a well-documented plan of action for the production year. The job
holder also ensures that remedial measures are taken to address product-
related quality issues and/or customer complaints relayed by business
operations.

Ability to exert technical expertise in all areas of production.
Ability to monitor and manage water resource of the farm and advise when
necessary.
Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
Ability to manage a workforce consisting of individuals from different
backgrounds and resolve problems and conflicts professionally.
Skill in the use of tools utilized in the repair of equipment and facilities.
Skill in maintaining records expertly.
Ability to effectively communicate complex information.
Willingness to work beyond normal hours.
Willingness to attend field days and any useful agricultural meetings.

Cmputer literacy.

Core Duties

-->Plans, monitors and schedules daily, weekly, monthly and annual farming activities to meet sales targets.
-->Recommends and initiates new income generating projects.
-->Supervises full-time or casual employees, or their equivalent, on a regular basis, and ensures that discipline is maintained at all times.
-->Makes recommendations regarding the employment and termination of employees in line with the seasonal demands of the farm.
-->Initiates purchase requisitions and other documentation for procurement of production stock and monitors prudent use.
-->Maintains various farm production records.
-->Takes all necessary biosecurity precautions to prevent outbreaks of crop and livestock diseases.
-->Observes livestock to detect signs of illness or injury and takes remedial measures working in close liaison with farm vet.
-->Carries out minor repairs of farm equipment and machinery in consultation with the Maintenance Officer.
-->Drives farm equipment when necessary.
-->Ensures that the farm production premises and structures are kept in a neat and tidy condition.
-->Carries out orientation and training of farm workers to ensure that they possess the necessary knowledge and skills.
-->Takes all necessary precautions to prevent outbreak of fires at the farm.
-->Provide timely feedback and regular reports to top management
-->Performs other duties assigned from time to time.

Qualifications and experience

-->Full Grade 12 Certificate
-->Two years of college with course work in Agriculture, Animal Sciences or related field
-->Three years of experience working on a major farm operation; OR,
-->Any equivalent combination or experience, training and/or education.
-->Possession of a valid driver’s license.
