Background

WWF is an International Non-Governmental Organization that deals with

Zambia is in tremendous need of power development to fuel its economic growth
while at the same time provide affordable electricity to its population who
are currently energy deprived. It is critical that Zambia pursues an energy
vision based on sustainable renewable energy which is economically
competitive, low cost, low impact and low conflict.

WWF-Zambia Country Office (WWF-ZCO) supports the government’s efforts to
enhance access to electricity for all and promoting renewable energy
development projects that are low cost low environmental impact and low
conflict. We envision a future in which electricity systems are accessible,
affordable and powering our economy with a more sustainable mix of renewable
energy technologies including solar, wind and low-impact hydropower. Given the
importance of enhancing access to renewable clean energy, WWF-ZCO is seeking
to hire a competent and highly motivated Energy Expert to lead our new
renewable energy project.

Position Description

The Energy Expert will serve as WWF Zambia’s focal point and technical expert
on renewable energy and will play a leadership role in coordinating the
country office project providing support to the Government, donor partners and
other stakeholders. The Energy Expert will be responsible for providing key
advice on strategic energy direction for the WWF Zambia Country Office.

Main responsibilities

_1\. Provide technical input in the development of Sustainable Water and
Energy Projects_

> Provide technical support in the development of the Renewable Energy and energy efficiency projects, plans and programmes;
> Support the development of evidence-based position papers and opportunities to diversify to new energy options;

> Foster learning and capacity between countries in developing production bases and markets for solar and other renewable energy solutions;
> With support from the team, lead the creation of an enabling environment for accelerated private sector investment in renewable energy solutions such as solar and wind.

_2._ *> _Provide overall strategic management oversight for the Renewable
Energy Work_

> Work in close association with project personnel, government, NGO/CSO partners, grantees, donors, consultants, and other key stakeholders to facilitate coordination, communication, and regular reporting of WWF ZCO’s Renewable Energy initiatives.
> Administer and monitors the budgets of assigned contracts and agreements, ensuring that reporting is accurate and timely. Review the status of projects in key landscapes, identifying problems and formulating recommendations for corrective action as appropriate.
> Follows up on deliverables and other requirements.
> Lead in the development of bankable projects concept(s) in order to assess potential funding sources for renewable energy projects.
> Mobilize and liaise with local and international partners interested in contributing to sustainable water and energy development in key Zambezi River basin landscapes, in collaboration with the relevant WWF Practices.

> Prepare and/or finalize scopes of work, budgets, and administrative information for contracts and ensure compliance with partners and/or donor requirements.

_3\. Analyse, research and create solutions_

> Contribute to research and analysis related to sustainable energy and water development in collaboration with partners and WWF network. Track local and international policies and decisions related to renewable energy development that may affect WWF’s freshwater conservation and energy goals.
> In close collaboration with the WWF network Practices, keep up to date with existing and emerging water and energy analyses for use with priority sectors and bi-lateral partnerships.

Qualifications and Experience

> Advanced university degree (Masters or above) in Engineering (Energy), Natural Resources Management, Business Administration or related field. Major or specialization in Sustainable Water and Energy development, Power-Grid Planning, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, Policy or related field is an asset.
> Relevant experience of not less than 6 years including experience in working and collaborating with various government agencies or interdisciplinary teams in renewable energy development and Financing.

> Ability to work effectively as a team member with a wide range of individuals across cultures and time zones;
> Independent worker, pro-active in thinking about opportunities to further improve the work;
> Excellent communication skills, both written and oral;
> Excellent Report writing skills;
> Good interpersonal skills with the ability to network and to develop and maintain strong relationships at all levels;
> Good fundraising skills
> Emphasis on delivery of results and reacts well to constructive criticism;
> Strong interest in nature conservation and commitment to the mission of WWF;
> Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software (Microsoft Prior experience in assessing climate risks for projects would be an advantage;
> Adherence to WWF’s values: knowledgeable, Optimistic, determined and Engaging.
> Exemplification of WWF’s key behaviours: Strive for Impact, Listen Deeply, Collaborate Openly, and Innovate Fearlessly.

Working Relationships

> Internal: The energy expert will interact on a regular basis with WWF Practices on Climate and Energy, Freshwater, and other relevant internal actors.
> External: under guidance of line managers, coordinate and communicate with public and private partners, donors, other NGOs and stakeholders.
